Hi I bought an old backgammon board today. He told me it came from FENWICK CASTLE JOHN'S ISLAND. It has a pitcher of the house inside. Very elaberately inlayed with wood. there must be 800 thousand peaces. just looking it up to see what i can find out about the place.

Love the history on your site, especially the part about the Johns Island Stud, which is how I found my way here. One request. The extensive history of Matchem that you quote is from my website Thoroughbred Heritage: www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/Matchem.html and I'd appreciate an attribution/credit for the information source. thanks very much! I was at Fenwick Hall on February 13, 2001. I was there with one of my sons' and one of my aunts', Frances Fenwick Ward. I ahd been putting together a family tree and through my research I had came across the information and stories about Fenwick Hall. As I believe my family descends from John Fenwick it was with interest that I made this trip and my Aunt was pleased to accompany me. I hope to be able to return again in the near future. When I was there in 2001 Fenwick Hall was owned by a Mr.John Pernell and there were workers there at the time in the process of renovations. Mr. Pernell told us that he was intending on restoring the residence and living there. It was indeed a grand place and probably even more so today.

I had the pleasure of being a guest at Fenwich Hall in 1949 for a few days. The house and the grounds stirred the imagination and a life-long interest. In the late 1990's, my husband and I drove through the gates up to the house for a brief look.

I am the daughter of Helena and Claude Blanchard, Sr who owned Fenwick from 1943 to 1979. My 6 brothers and I had a wonderful childhood having the priviledge of living in a magnificent dwelling. We talk today of our life at Fenwick. Our children also enjoyed all our times with "Gran-Nel and Grandaddy". We had horses, cows, mules, many dogs and cats, chickens, turkeys, hogs and more. Daddy farmed many of the fields and took extra produce to the markets...only after sharing goods with the 3 other families that helped us on the plantation. Many social events took place from time to time. We entertained for the City of Charleston, visiting dignateries, musicians and many of the clergy of the Catholic Church. Civic groups had fund-raisers and many of the Catholic schools held their annual picnics on the grounds. Our parents were very, very generous and wanted to share our good fortune with others. We are most fortunate to have lived in such a beautiful home.

Hi, A very intresting site. I am close to finishing a book on the North East of England and the slavery business. In one chapter I deal with members of the Northumbrian gentry who travelled to America in the 17th/18th Century and became planters or merchants. More than one Fenwick appears to have made that journey. There is portrait in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle of one Capt Robert Fenwick, his wife, Ann Ord and black servant standing in front of Norham Castle, Northumberland, c 1750. I do wonder what connections this Robert had with America. I wonder if you would allow me to use one of your photos of Fenwick Hall in my book, attributed of course. Best wishes, John Charlton.

The "movie" that may have included the gate was probably "The Georgia Peaches" (1980) Check IMDB.com for more info. It is the only movie/tv pilot filmed in Johns Island, South Carolina. The Fenwicks arrived on the Ark and Dove in Saint Maries Citty, Maryland in 1634. Edward Fenwick is a common name among the many Fenwicks in that area. Research may provide additional details connecting Johns Island to Saint Marys County, MD. Further details can be found by contacting Eleanor Ripple of Loveville, Maryland.

I live off of Brownswood road and drive by the plantation every day. I have always wondered what it looked like back there. It was great to finally see this beautiful piece of history. However, it is devastating what big builders such as Portrait homes are doing to the surrounding properties. Keep up the good work Mr. Hauser.

The picture of Fenwick's Gate is by Anne Worsham Richardson. I think I have the album of The Legend of Fenwick. The Double McGuffin was the movie shot there.

Thanks for the pictorial history of the Fenwick Plantation. I had been looking for books with history of the site and have been able to find very little so this was a very pleasant surprise. I will continue to visit the site for new additions. Keep up the good work. Preserving history is of utmost importance. PB
