Comments Dear Mrs. Miller and Family, I was very pleased to read your website and to learn of the great legacy of the Miller Funeral Home. I write to invite your thoughts on a research question for a project on which I am working. My question has to do with a nineteenth/early twentieth century practice of preparing the deceased's body in the home. I have read several Internet sites that confirm that the body of the deceased was washed and dressed sometimes by family members before the embalmer arrived. I want to know if in rural black communities in the South, where the water source and the tub were outside, was a sheet or a covering used to preserve the dignity of the body while it was being washed. For example, after the death, would there not be children and neighbors coming by; so, did the family members or others who did the washing and dressing, maybe outside the house, hold up a white sheet to keep others from viewing the body? How was the dignity of the deceased preserved during the entire process if the preparation was don

Comments Please send condolence to the family of Frances Brown as follows: I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Recently I lost my dear mother, and found great comfort in the words of Jesus at John 11:11-14, where he likens death to being asleep, and at John 5:28,29 - "All those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." For more, I turn to the website at: www.jw.org (Search:Comfort) Thank You
