My son in Florida discovered your page and sent me the link! I have taken Amtrak to Washington many times but would love to see an alternative for the very reasons you mentioned. It can be difficult to get reservations unless one plans well ahead. Much as I enjoy having breakfast on the way, I would gladly forego such amenities to have better service. Good luck on making this happen!

As a recent transplant to Charlottesville, I am disappointed by the current level of rail service to DC -- particularly given the traffic & aggressive driving on Rt. 29. An efficient express link to downtown DC or at least to the end of the VA-metro would be a huge benefit to a large number of folks. Please keep me updated!

Very interested in promoting mass transit, particularly rail as a means of reducing pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.

Am a firm believer in the benefits of passenger/commuter rail transportation in a setting such as ours. Have a background in graduate studies in public administration and city and regional planning. Would like to see success in your efforts to tie CVL more closely to the DC area via rail. Best of luck.

I am a big booster of rail service, both freight and passenger. I believe that it is the socially responsible thing to provide rail alternatives, even if it isn't self-supporting.I would love for the VRE to stop at our station in Culpeper. I would use it to go to both DC and Charlottesville.

I strongly support your initiative to create better rail service from Charlottesville to Washington, DC. For many, many reasons we need more and better rail service linking Charlottesville to major neighboring cities. To those transportation experts who say that it's more economical to use automobiles, I always ask: but have you added the opportunity cost of driving into your economic model? When I ride the train, I can work. When I work, I earn $X/hour. When I drive, I had better not be working--and usually am not (apart from the occasional cell phone conversation). The trains of Europe are filled with businessman working away, earning a living--and arriving at their destinations unstressed by the strain of driving. When I first heard about your initiative, I thought it was probably just another utopian scheme doomed to failure. But now that I have seen the composition of your board, I am very encouraged: you are clearly a group of distinguished high-achievers who are politically plugged in on the local and state levels. Let us not talk about "commuter rail" but rail service from Charlottesville, and maybe even Roanoke to the DC area. We would like to train to DC for weekend cultural and sporting events. Mere commuter rail is short sighted.

I agree with your concepts. Possibly a good start might be a shuttle bus to the Fredricksburg VA VRE Station from Charlottesville.

A market study investigating the real anticipated benefit of rail b/t C'ville and DC would be interesting to see. By 2010 BRAC will force several hundred highly skilled government jobs into the area from DC. An efficient and inexpensive commuter line could entice many government staff uninterested in moving to stay in their DC suburb but commute to C'ville. As a former DC suburbanite I anticipate an added benefit for both DC and C'ville tourists wishing for an easy weekend route to VA wineries or DC based culture. I encourage a study to see if indeed there is a market for both the commuter and tourist.

It's great to hear that a group is working to increase rail service, BUT What about repair and improvement to our rail system to ship goods and materials thereby reducing the number of trucks on our roads? SHIP BY RAIL should be a phrase on everyone's lips. This would relieve congestion, reduce catastrophic accidents, decrease pollution and our dependence on foreign oil.

We have lived in the C'ville area for over a year now and travel to D.C. by car to Vienna and then take the Metro. It would be great to be able to take a train at C'ville station (with better parking and lighting). Just think of the additional visitors to C'ville and vice versa to D.C. It should have been thought about years ago.... especially with gas prices increasing constantly! Traveling in Europe by train is wonderful, comfortable and cost effective. We should learn something from them.
