Comments The league is healthier than it's been in years. Good competitive play and more teams. Glad to see things improving for local hockey. I appreciate the website, it's good to be able to keep tabs on scores and standings. Thanks.

Comments I really think the league needs to be more updated. The site is great and very well kept up to date, but you have 9 teams with about 2 really good teams, a few decent teams and 2 teams that are really struggling. It's not fun being on a team like the wild getting pounded for 20 goals a night on average. Teams don't show respect and let up. I've never played in a league where you just kept trying to disrespect the other team by just embarrassing them. The competition is heavily unbalanced as it has been for years. A divisional format would help improve the league. In playoffs, it should come down to who's the best, no question. However, during the reg. Season it would greatly help to create a divisional format where some teams play other teams more than everybody else. The league would be more competitive, the standings wouldn't be so unbalanced, and EVERY team could actually have some fun and feel like they can compete on most nights. I've seen this concept work very well in other men's leagues and I think this would be a great

Comments The only thing with the divisional alignment is how do you know who the "top" teams will be, and how do you know who the "bottom" teams will be at the beginning of the year? All leagues have this, even in the NHL, there are the Caps and the Ducks and then you have the Maple Leafs. Yes, you could break into two divisions (top tier teams and lower tier teams). You could play your own division twice, and the other division once. Or you could play your own division three times if you want that many games. But in the end, all 9 teams have to be combined into one playoff system. And if you go by record, it isn't fair to the 4th place team who had to play the best teams all year long versus the 5th place team who played all the lower tier teams all year long. It is quite conceivable one of the lower tier teams would have a better record than a top tier team. So there is no answer. The only answer is what you said: the individual teams and the individual players have to take it upon themselves to let off the gas, have fun, and

Comments Good point, Brett, although what if we broke it up into 2 divisions and they didn't play the opposite division at all or in the playoffs. I play in the RHL in Lancaster and there's an a/b division and a c division. Both leagues have 6 teams and play 20 game seasons. There are no inter league games and playoffs are within division. At the end of the year you have 2 champs. One for each division. Obviously to your point, teams can get better, at which point the league can decide in the offseason based off the year before if a team should move up or down to the other division. It would spread out competitiveness and give some of these teams a purpose to play and a better chance to win every hockey game. We may not have as many teams as Rhl, but SVHL is getting more popular again and it would be a great opportunity for the league along with the teams and players.

Comments I think if the League got up to 12 teams, maybe even 10 teams, then an A/B division would be great. If it was advertised this way, it might even entice a group of players to form a team knowing they could play in the "B" bracket. Looking at this years results, and with no disrespect to anyone, the field could have been split 6-3. I would like to make a suggestion that the league try and advertise for a 10th team, and if so, have an A&B League next year, 6 teams in the A and 4 teams in the B. The A league would play a 15 game schedule and the B league play a 12 game schedule.

Comments I second this notion. Congrats to weis markets on ending mifflinburg's streak of championship wins and best of luck to all teams in the future, but I also really hope that this is an idea the SVHL will look into.

Comments Andrew and Brett, You guys bring up some very interesting concerns and ideas. What you need to do is attend the meetings we have in the fall of the year before the season start so we can descuess your concerns and ideas as a league. Keep watching the web site for the meeting time.

Comments Andrew and Brett, I just wanted to revisit your ideas from last year and let you know that the league is likely to have a 10th team next season. We are glad to be adding another team, but unfortunately it is likely to be the league limit unless more rink rental time slots are made available. With the 5 time slots per weekend we now have, 10 teams will allow for each team to play once per weekend. With 10 teams, it may be possible to consider a divisional system and we could certainly discuss at our next league meeting. What if regular season was held as usual, then two 5-team double elimination playoff brackets established based on regular season standings? This would then result in the "A" champion and "B" champion. This would place greater importance on regular season record and playoff seeding and provide a chance for teams 6-10 to compete for their own title. A possible downside to this would be that there is no possible way that the "A" champion could come from a team seeded lower than 5th but that is already very u

Comments (continued from previous post...) A possible downside to this would be that there is no possible way that the "A" champion could come from a team seeded lower than 5th but that is already very unlikely. Our next league meeting likely won't be until August, but it might be worth talking over.

Comments David, I think that would be a good start to this idea. At least this way, breaking up the playoff format like that gives every team the hope that they can compete for a championship and have a fighting chance. As you said, a team lower than 5th already probably wouldn't win the championship in A league. When's the last time a team finished 6th or lower and won the league title? Probably never or quite some time. The only concern I would have (which I really hope wouldn't happen) but would be teams trying to get into the B division to take advantage of the lower teams toward the end of the season. I could see some guys tanking just to play teams they feel they could beat. That being said, I really do think this idea is worth a try. A ton of men's leagues outside Sunbury do this and it works very well.
