Hey guys just wanted to say hello to all the Lai Khe and Gela vets. I was with D Co 1/28th from July 1969 through Nov 1969... I was in on that battle north of Apollo on 25 Oct 1969 as a buck Sgt squad leader. You are doing a great job Larry of keeping the memory of the Black Lions at Gela alive...thanks.

My husband SALVATORE GALLO was stationed in Firebase Lorraine - Aug 68 - Aug 69. He earned his Silver Star at Lai Khe April 1969. He was in November Platoon - Alpha Company - 2nd Battalion, 16th Regiment, 1st Infantry. He had prostate cancer April 2004 and died of bladder cancer May 5, 2012 (I believe it is linked to AO, but not on the presumptive list). He never talked about his time in Vietnam. I have been doing a lot of research and found these pics very interesting.

I met Richard at The Wall in 1987 while visiting DC with a group of Vietnam veterans. We returned to Minneapolis, eventually married and spent seven years together. Richard shared many, many stories and photos he much later developed. Even though we were unable to stay living in the same house, we didn't let a day go by without a phone call. He was a brilliant man and always held my interest. Richard was so happy to have found Jeff Johns' family. He died in a house fire 5/13/11.

I was at Gela on May 12th. Didn't recall that it was Mother's Day until reading the other posts. I recall helping to carry wounded to the evacutation area and holding IVs for some of them. Watched as the color drained from one of the KIAs. Never knew his name. I helped carry Ken Sellers (sp) to one of the Dustoffs. Ken was from Vero Beach, Fla. I don't know if he survived.

Was at Gela from start to finish and proud to say I still talk to some the ole boys from that time in history that no one would have remembered if you were not doing this fine tribute. To all the Red One Brothers of all MOS's I salute you and if ever needed just give me a call and I will send a few rounds of H.E. Larry you are indeed a fine man and what this country should be about. I know for sure we old Arty boys appreciate your efforts. Take care all. SGT. Bobby W. Foster A BTRY 8/6TH Artillery

I was the medic for mike platoon Bravo C0. 1/28 infantry 1st infantry division. I was in on the diigging the first bunkers for FSB Gela. Sometime in May 1969. Steve Brose was also killed by a charge on the perimeter. It was during a thunderstorm and lightening must have set it off. He was on listening post and I carried him back. I was wounded on June 25th carrying wounded back from a listening post at FSB Gela.

I came into FSB Gela in June of 1969 and served on Gun 1(named ACE) which is 102mm howitzer of Battery A 2/32. I served for about a month and a fellow name Green in Ammo section asked me to trade with him and we did. I knew Lenny Potts of the recon team and Doc Campbell very well, bless their souls. I watched the recon team come in that day on the 14th as the tent I lived was at the entrance to Gela. I was wounded on Oct 31 at FSB Apollo out on the helicopter "pad" in a 3/4 qtr ton truck and was sent stateside in Nov 1969. Would like to thank the medics who treated me especially the tall lanky one who tore into those ARVN soldiers in my defense. I really like what Larry Johns has done on this site, as it is the opposite of war, love and forgiveness. Yeah, we all lived an adventurous life here and we have a lot of good stories mixed in with fighting to share and remember because we are a band of brothers. I'm here in Houston playing geologist and drilling oil wells and never retiring.

Really enjoy your website Larry. As, I think I may have told you I have also been back to area where Gela was located several times but never truly knew where it was located. As, you and I have seen the area looks quite a bit different than what it did back in the 60s and 70s. I first drove to the area in 1992, with some Vietnamese friends who knew nothing of the area and today it looks much different than it did in "92. Keep up the good work. I should be in that area next week if all goes as planned.

Larry, Right now I'm in Saigon and will be for three more weeks and I again looked at the pictures and video and everytime I do it brings back memories. You've done a great service and I appreciate it. To hear the old songs with the videos and pictures takes me right back to then. If you search out the book "Charlie Company and what it did to us" by Peter Goldman, you will notice it's about my company C 2/28 Ist but its written about the same time period and place your brother and I served. Good job, Larry. I appreciate what you've done. This is my 27th trip back here to Vietnam. I still don't know why I come

I am visiting my brother (Brad Davis) in Atlanta.I was a junior in high school when he was in Vietnam & have always been interested in the experiences he had their, but a bit hesitant to approach the subject. So I really appreciate the work & time you have put into this project. I look forward to reading more as you continue your search. thank you.

Hello all. Sorry to be getting to this party so late but Doc Shirley has kept me informed on the book progress and I can't wait to get a few copies. I was the RTO for Delta 1/28 while Bob was the medic. Hate to admit that the name Gela doesn't really ring a bell but the pix surely bring back lots of memories. Looking forward to the book.

Gun 2 Alpha 2/33rd. I was there the night we had ground attack at Gela. We lost our gunner, Jack Tirrell. I often wonder what happened to him.
