Comments I am very pleased that there is a group dedicated to the memory and the history of Marineland. I remember visiting as a child, then again as a pre-teenager when they added the Baja Reef. I am very sad that Marineland is gone, and I remember the controversies with Sea World (which motivated them to buy out Marineland, which was not doing well).

Comments I grew up in pv and worked summers at marineland. What a great experience. I'm now 61 years old and was born the same year marineland opened!

Comments Hi Philip: Thank you for your entry in our guestbook. Yes, mermaids were featured at the park for both public display in static exhibits, as well as swimming in our larger exhibit tanks. This was popular in the late 1950's through the mid 1960's. The gift shops also carried mermaid merchandise for many years. We've forwarded your note to our research department who will be getting in contact with you. Thank you again for writing.

Comments I have home movie footage of the park from March 1980- is this something that someone in your society would be interested in seeing?

Comments Greetings - I am researching a book on the representation of mermaids in 20th Century popular culture and I wondered whether you knew if there had ever been mermaid-themed paintings or else mermaid themed entertainments at Marineland in the 1950s and 1960s? Best Wishes - Phil

Comments Marineland of the Pacific was a large part of my childhood and the childhoods of my older two children. My younger two missed it because we showed up at the gates just shortly after its sudden closing. I remember the shock and disappointment of the locals with the suddenness of the closure. We are so happy about the creation of the Historical Society and its mission to collect materials and records, and to organize and halt the loss of the history of this critical and important facility. Thank you, and best of luck in this venture.

Comments I had the privilege of visiting Marineland of the Pacific three times. Once each in '65, 69, and my last visit WAS in '70. After Sea World bought out Marineland in the late 80's, Los Angeles never had another park to match it since. Now we must travel more than two hours by interstate, down to Sea World of San Diego, in order to visit a compatible venue. I sure miss Marineland.

Comments My father brought our family to Marinelandofthepacific several times over the years when my brother & I were young. Much less corporate feel. Much more learning environment. Really miss it.

Comments Hi - I want to share how my family enjoyed going to Marineland during the 10 years between 1967 and 1977 that we lived in Glendora, CA. I was of the ages 4-14 yrs, and in my memory is forever the image of petting a dolphin in a large above-ground pool, and remembering how soft and spongy it was, and not hard and plastic like I though it was going to be! We fed them little fish from what looked like a french fry container. I remember the Japanese ladies diving in the in-ground pool for oysters which contained pearls. I have a lot of memories of Marineland, and I actually still have old stuffed toys from there, one is a dolphin, and one is a whale, both have the Marineland tags on them. I can send pics to you if you'd like. They are still in excellent shape. If you have a museum I'd be glad to send them to you. I also remember Japanese Deer Park, and I have a little tray from there that says Japanese Deer Park on it. Thanks for having this website and preserving the memory of Marineland!! Danielle Wolters

Comments One of the biggest disapointments in my life is that I never got to visit Marineland - although I did make countless visits to its sister oceanarium in Florida.

Comments Went to Marineland in '56, '81 and '86. It saddens me to know it's gone. Even though I was only 5 years old the first time I visited, I have several fond memories,(including an unbelievably large grouper), and in '81 was able to experience the Baja Reef. I am happy to know that the history of it is being preserved. Respectfully, and with best wishes, Scott Schenkel Dallas, TX

Comments I worked at Marineland the summer of 1973. I was a mermaid that swam in the giant fish tank and later looked for my lost earring in the killer whales mouth. I used to play with Corky, when no one was around, and spray her with water. I would watch the Corky and Orky squirt water at the same spot on the side to the tank, so that the paint pealed, and then the painters had to come and repaint it. They wanted company and loved it when you played with them. When I came back for a Rose Bowl in 1977 Corky came over and waved her fin at me. Made me realize she remembered me. Loved those guys.

Comments I have memories of going to Marineland in 7th grade with my dad, who's company was building the large tanks. I stayed all day there numerous times while he worked, bringing a girlfriend w/me to pass the time. We had a blast!

Comments I remember back in the 60s my parents made reservations at the on ground hotel for our stay. Was excited on the drive from San Diego, what would I see? Walking through the gates I was so impressed by what I saw in the huge tank. So many different fish, so much going on. Bubbles, the Pilot whale, was doing acts and could be watched through underwater windows. I had a great time interacting with all the fish/displays. Back at the room, it over looked the ocean, steep grassy slopes going down to the ocean. For a city kid this was one awesome trip. Memories.
