Comments These are wonderful pictures of this grand old estate. I did want to correct one thing. Underneath one of the imagine, it states that there was once a racetrack built by the original owner, bit no traces of that track exist today. That racetrack was turned into a main road that runs straight through John's Island. Many people don't realize this, but that track is now Maybank Highway which runs from Folly Road, James Island, SC to Wadmalaw Island, SC. It's believed that the original track ran from the River Road intersection to Bohicket/Main Road intersection. That part of Maybank Highway is completely straight.

Comments Thanks for the history of Fenwick Hall. It was a pleasure to read about the history of this beautiful place. I pass by it several times a week and often wonder what is happening with Fenwick Hall now. I have met several people over the years that knew people that went to Fenwick Hall for 'rehab' when it was a recovery Hospital. It's a beautiful place, what is still there. Thank you.

Comments Beautiful house and grounds with an interesting story. Just watched the ghost hunters out of Tennessee. So glad the property is being restored. Way to many of the places of our history are being destroyed.

Comments This is a such a wonderful page but the photo supposedly of Ann Fenwick's ghost is wrong. That is the very well-known 1991 photo of Madonna of Bachelor's Grove Cemetery which is just outside of Chicago. It's not Ann Fenwick nor was the photo even taken in SC. I do love this page and have gladly shared it with many of my history friends! The photos of the home are beautiful. Thank you for sharing! -Millie

Comments I visited Fenwick Hall as a young news reporter when it was a hospital. Seems I was interviewing an addiction counselor and for some reason, I remember an indoor pool on the property. I still stop on River Road to look through the iron gate at the avenue of oaks. It remains one of my favorite spots in the Lowcountry. I'd be interested in learning more about the ghost stories at Fenwick. Thanks for preserving the memories of this landmark. Regards, Warren Peper

Comments Enjoyed the pictures very much. I wish I could read the accompanying text, however the ornate font selection, minute point size combined with orange on black background is impossible to read.

Comments I stayed at Fenwick Hall when it was a hospital. It was a very beautiful place and was always relaxing. The buildings they build there to me took from its beauty. I was wondering if they tore all those extra off and dorm buildings down. Thank you for this site. I enjoyed reading the history and looking at the pictures.

Comments When I was about 11 or 12 years old shortly after the new owners had purchased the property I visited Fenwick. My uncle was working on the renovation of the carriage house and they allowed him to bring my cousin and I to visit. We spent the entire day playing in the main house and all over the grounds. I wish I could remember the owners names. The wife gave us a tour (there's a door under the blue stair case that leads to the basement) and told us all about everything. We even got to take home a crystal from a chandelier in the great room (I think), I still have it all this time later! She even took us on a few errands with her (she drove a Land Rover) and to a florist shop that had the biggest most beautiful roses I had ever seen. She bought each of us one. That day is one of my favorite memories. I even did a few school reports on the plantation. I would love to go back one day and bring my children.

Comments I was a client at Fenwick for 58 days in Sept and Oct 1984. I have been clean and sober since. Who would not get clean, living so close to God and his greatness at Fenwick Hall New Beginnings, St John Island, Charleston, SC. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Comments I am told I am related to the builder of this plantation. Do you have any genealogy or history of this family? I am told my family was traced back to Staffordshire, England back to the 1650's. Of course when my direct relatives came to the USA, the spelling of the last name was done phonetically, and the "w" was dropped in place of an extra "n." Just curious. Thank you, Russ
