FYI I started at WMMR at the U in the fall of 1956. Was appointed station manager there before leaving school. Was at WLDY, Ladysmith, summer of 1957. Did Sunday morning time-temp between religious programs on WDGY for a while. Did Sunday nights on WLOL a few months. Worked a summer at KXRA in Alexandria. Returned to the Twin Cities and did mornings at KEVE, then afternoons, then fired. Was at KANO in Anoka 1960-65, then retired from radio, and began looking for a job where I didn't have to work weekends and holidays.

The story about Formula 63, KDWB, has a glaring error. The patent medicine wasn't Serutan, it was Hadacol. I was working at KEVE at the time and remember the promotion vividly. I even went to a Snyder's Drug Store to get my free sample. Here's information from Wikipedia: Hadacol was a patent medicine marketed as a vitamin supplement. Its principal attraction, however, was that it contained 12 percent alcohol (listed on the tonic bottle's label as a "preservative"), which made it quite popular in the dry counties of the southern United States. It was the product of four-term Louisiana State Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc, a Democrat from Erath in Vermilion Parish in southwestern Louisiana. He was not a medical doctor, nor a registered pharmacist, but had a strong talent for self-promotion. Time magazine once described him as "a stem-winding salesman who knows every razzle-dazzle switch in the pitchman's trade".[1]

My first job in radio was as a 15 year old at WWOD in the summer of 1964. I had passed the FCC license exam when many of the station's part timers had not. Result was two 6-hour shifts every weekend.

How come there are no entries about KLBB ? It started in the building that WMIN was in in St. Paul. Moved around some and finally returned to 611 Frontenac Place when Cargill owned it several 'CCO and 'DGY personalities worked there over time.

Ooops, I got cut off. Part 2: Another chart topic: the Lynchburg newspaper used to run a Top 20 record chart on Sundays, until May 1974, called “Young Folks Choose Week’s Top Records.” It started sometime before Jan 1971, maybe into the 60s even, I’m checking old issues of the paper on microfilm to see. Question: does anyone know the source of this Top 20? Was it from one of the local radio stations? Or local record sales? It didn’t come from the national charts, as there were lots of local/regional hits on it that never made Billboard. I’ve been contacting the newspaper, but so far no one knows anything about it. I’ve also got some WLLL radio checks that I’ll forward to you, Rick, when I can find some time, DJ’s from 71-73. Plus I have a brief history of WLLL I need to clean up and send you, that you can post on your WLLL page. Thanks so much, Rokin Robin

Rick, thanks so much for hosting a WLLL page on your website. I have such super memories of listening to Triple L in the 70s, used to frequently tape and write down their weekly Top 40 countdowns on Saturday nights, till they went Drake-Chenault in early 1974, ugh. 1971 was such a great year for Top 40 music! Speaking of which, I posted 57 WLLL countdowns on the ARSA website recently, half of 1972, most from 1973, and the year-end countdowns of 71-72-73. And I’m seeking more. If anyone out there has any WLLL Top 40 countdowns sheets, or knows of someone that used to work at Triple L, please email me at robinore()verizon.net [replace () with @]. I’ll get them posted at ARSA for you and give you the credit. Originals, copies, scans, whatever. ARSA has 66,000 weekly surveys from 2300 radio stations from 1957 to 1989, totally amazing US radio history! Another chart topic: the Lynchburg newspaper used to run a Top 20 record chart on Sundays, until May 1974, called “Young Folks Choose Week’s Top Records.” It started sometime

This picture: "WLLL's Afternoon Guy, Tony Love, Either at a Remote, or a Salesman at a Stereo Store Selling Reel to Reel Tape Recorders" was actually taken in front of the IGM 750 automation system that ran WGOL and WLLL when it went to the Drake format in the late 70's (?) I worked in that room before going to work at WSET-TV. I think he was in front of the WLLL side. I also think that was the first automation system that used a computer to run it. That tape device to the left of him was the DECtape that held the programming and traffic log info. Whenever a new event started like a spot or song the screen would refresh with beeps and a teletype would print the as run log. It was a pretty noisy room when both stations were running. I don't know if you heard but Bob Abbott died a couple of days ago. You can find the obit in the Lynchburg newspaper.

What a joy to find your site...what wonderful memories. I have many "original" photos of WCCO used for the history publications of the radio station. I was friends with Bob Montgomery "Bob White" who was a weekend talent a "CCO" in the 60's when I was a teenager. I have a dear friend Mike Kronforst at Brown Institute who has trained so many of these voice talents. Thank you for keeping those wonderful memories alive with sound! Keep up the great work! Great website! Glad to be the first post of 2013. Worked at KFMX for a while in 1978-79 and grew up seeing the WDGY tower from my window in Bloomington. Great memories. Keep up the great work!

Hi there old room mate. I've got a couple of old air checks from KTCR-FM. How come no mentions of yours truly in the files. My address is 905 South Jay Circle; Sioux Falls, SD 57103. Cell phone: 605-212-4560. I'd love to hear from you. The Conclave that Tom Kay, Doug Lee and I started is still going strong in the Cities in July.

Just found this site and wondered if you can help me find The Slim Jim's Amateur Hour that aired 1945 or so. My mom sang on this show as a child and I'm looking to find a recording of it for her. Thank you so much.

I have enjoyed seeing the old pictures from WWOD radio. However, I would like to know if you have any pictures of Richard Connelly, who did a paid show on Sunday morning and also Warner Kidd, who played the music for his Sunday morning show. Please write me back at Captainkidd01@aol.com. I would greatly appreciate any of the info and pictures that I could get of this. Thanks for your great collection.

Your WDGY site says: "Jimmy Reed was originally at KDWB-AM 630 before coming to WDGY 1130 on September 23, 1969. WDGY Jimmy open his 1st show at WDGY he stated he was "..out on pass from the suburban rest-home." An obvious reference to his old employing station." Not quite true. Both Jimmy Reed and Tac Hammer left KDWB-AM in 1968 when Gene Okerlund became the program director. They both worked at KRSI-AM, St. Louis Park, the "Request Radio" oldies station. Jimmy Reed left KRSI for WDGY in 1969. His reference to the "rest home" referred to KRSI, not KDWB.
