Comments Looking forward to learning more about your group and their efforts. I had my first PM house this year and it was so enjoyable for my husband and I and our neighbors. I'd like to learn more about handling and cleaning the compartments during the nesting /hatching period. I was somewhat scared of bothering them since they seemed so upset when I did weekly checks.

Comments I have not had any martins visit my house. I put up a new house in early January that has the crescent moon openings that has really frustrated the sparrows. I have only one attempt to make a nest but not very successfully. Now to my question, where did I go wrong? I have had martins in my old house but was replaced due to wind damage. I have the house at the same height and have put some pine needles in to assist in the nest building, could the needles be the problem? Time is short or it may be too late, can anyone help???? Thanks John

Comments Dwight, thank you for your question about cleaning the Martin housing each year or leaving material. Yes, we clean our housing out each year usually in late October. We plug the entrance holes and lower the housing. In January, we pre-build the colony nest compartments with pine needles which we cut 3 or 4 inches long. This seems to help give them get a better head start in their breeding season. Prior to pre-building the nests, we have found several times where the first timers would lay their eggs on the metal flooring of the compartment. We hope this helps to answer your question.
