Comments to convince our legislators to get it on the ballot, and then have to be very aggressively involved in the campaign to pass it if it makes it on the ballot. It certainly could be a big year for us politically. I had lunch with George Teague while at HHI and attempted to convince him to send one of his young stallions to Kentucky. He told me that he had actually considered it, but one of the farms in OUR state had advised him against it due to the uncertainty. I won't mention any names. I am happy to say that he actually seems to be open to the possibility once again. He just sent 2 to OH in hopes they get things turned around. That's about all I have for now, feel free to drop by with your thoughts and comments anytime. Again, they are appreciated. Gabe

Comments Hey Mike, I appreciate the comments, this section was starting to get some dust on it. I actually just saw you had posted when I jumped on to update the site and I believe I have probably addressed a lot of your concerns in my update. We certainly seem to be in a better position to get something done than we have been in years. We have pushed ALL three tracks to move on Instant Racing by attempting to give them incentives to install the machines NOW. However, all have declined and feel that it is better to await a final decision before investing in the product. The results at Kentucky Downs continue to amaze me, and I hope we can get a positive ruling soon. I have spoken with Brett Boyd (President of Michigan HHA) a few times over the last week, and I know they are in extensive talks to install the machines at their tracks. They were amazed with the success of Kentucky Downs as well. We may be in for a busy year politically if we can get the ball rolling with an expanded gaming constitutional amendment. We will hav

Comments It seems like nothing is happening in our business,The Governor has said he's full steam ahead,Instant wagering at Ky Downs is up 24% and brought 700,000. plus to the track and the thorobred horseman! Whats wrong with our people do they want to go down in flames or are they going to get on board!! Didn't you go to a meeting in Florida a couple of weeks ago? Wasn't anything said that would be of interest to us the Kentucky Horseman! Merry Christmas and hopefully a Happy New Year, with some help for the industry!!

Comments (continued from below) out a 2-day land lease with The Red Mile. This would be similar to The Red Mile leasing part or all of their land for other events throughout the year. I am not sure how they were compensated for the land lease, but we all know they made something off the deal. Even though technically they were not the 'host track.' Even if they had been, under the current contract setup it would not have added to our 'guaranteed' purse amount. Let me know if you have any other concerns. Gabe

Comments Hey Mike & Aaron, I will take a look into the qualifiers at the fairgrounds Mike. I know that we ran into problems trying to have qualifiers at Red Mile last year because the commission would not let us hold them without a working teletimer. I am not sure if the same requirement would have to be in place if we tried having Q'fers at a fair track. Aaron, We are currently on the final year of a guaranteed contract with The Red Mile. Meaning if they handle $10 billion or $10 between now and the end of the year, we are still going to be racing for the exact same purse account over our 21 racing days in 2011. As far as the Derby & Oaks betting at Red Mile goes, I know Keeneland was still the 'host' track and ran the entire operation (their tellers, under their contracts with Churchill). The Red Mile was not their first choice, as they wanted to set up betting terminals at the horse park. It is my understanding that the commission informed them that they could ONLY host wagering at pari-mutuel facilities, thus they worked o

Comments How could the Red Mile accept bets on thoroughbred races? Is the Red Mile going to give the purse account its share of what they took in on the Kentucky Derby and Oaks cards? Seeing as how the purse account gave up $100,000 last year. Where does the Association and Racing Commission stand on this issue?

Comments I have beeen thinking that maybe the fair personell could consider having qualifiers at Lebanon, Ky. The fairgrounds is full and most horses are ready to qualify, but its a long way, plus a lot of expense to the nearest track.

Comments Mike, I agree totally. Obviously given our racing calendar, the 2-year olds would only be able to race at Lexington still. I also think it would be better overall for KENTUCKY horsemen if we can race for possibly a few legs followed by a smaller final.

Comments About the sire stakes question. Even if it wasn't feasible to race legs at the other tracks,I believe it would be in the best interest of the Ky horsemen to have more legs with a smaller final.

Comments Gabe, Again, I was just passing their sentiments on, this was not my concern or opinion. I did want to clarify about the totals being released in past elections is all. Of course, there is no way to know if someone's vote counted by simply posting the vote totals. It would be to the extreme and a bit ridiculous to have the organization post a complete list of who voted and whether it was counted or not. However, I do think vote totals for each candidate can be shared without jeopardizing someone's feelings or whatever the concern was that was raised that led to the totals not being released in the first place. In every election nationwide, the total votes cast for each candidate, the number of votes or ballots cast in the election and the percentage of the total membership or voting base that voted are readily available for public knowledge. This information should not offend any of the candidates, but rather inspire them to take a different approach in the next election if they decide to run. The independent firm hired to

Comments Hey Ken, I appreciate the heads up that the vote totals had been released in the past. I will follow up once again and see if they would like me to go ahead and post the actual vote counts. The one thing I will mention for those implying 'shady' practices for not seeing that their vote was counted, how would it satisfy their curiosity if solely the vote totals were posted? The totals would not clarify this point whatsoever. We pay a PREMIUM for these elections to go through an independent third party to ensure there is no wrongdoing, so I believe anyone with sour grapes should keep that in mind.

Comments Gabe...just fyi, when I last ran for the KHHA board in 2007, the vote tallies were sent out in the newsletter by Mr. Napier. I do not know if this policy changed since that time or not, but I can tell you I have gotten several comments from members expressing sentiments like (and I am not quoting anyone here) "It seems shady for the voting results not to be posted for all members to see and to not be able to know their votes counted." So, perhaps the Board can reconsider this and allow the results to be shared with everyone as it is a public election within our organization. Thanks!

Comments Hello to all, I am writing in regards to the latest test requirement, Equine Piroplasmosis. I wanted to write and give a little incite on this test. Breathitt Veterinary Center in Hopkinsville and University of KY Diagnostic Lab in Lexington runs the test for 15 dollars per strain and there are two strains required. UKDLab also charges a 10$ accession fee(one time, not per specimen). This is what your veterinary's cost will be, so please be aware of their cost and their mark up. I just wanted to relay my information because from what I hear some veterinary's are misinforming their clients.

Comments I think the new rule change is a great idea! I will consider this an eye for an eye. There was no hesitation when the rule was changed in (the middle of the stream) to exclude non-reidents from racing in the fairs. You could not stand the competion. You had to figure out some way to try to get all the money. You did not consider or care the devastation it would cause on owners and trainers. So you , the breeders, are going to outsmart yourselves and put you own selves out of business! You have my blessings!

Comments Mike, I agree with you that the Illinois Horsemen were simply betrayed. Unfortunately that is politics at it's worst. Just gives you a sick feeling for what went down there. I heard that the guy said he did not bring it up for a vote because the Governor would have vetoed it. Just simply a cop out, and absolutely no excuse for doing their part to do the right thing. With a new legislature being sworn in today, any efforts in Illinois will have to completely start from scratch. Not that it makes it any better for them, but we certainly know how they feel as you eluded to. It will be interesting to follow the situation in Ohio now with the change of administrations.

Comments Well Illinois Horsemen got the rug yanked out from under them!! They needed 60 votes think they had 65 and then,POlITICS TOOK OVER, and left them wondering what had just happened,12 hours later they are still wondering why they were betrayed. Guess we understand that here in Ky. How a few or one can hold several industries hostage!! What s shame that would have benifited us directly and indirectly. Hope we have better luck!! with our legislators.

Comments Hey Mike, I got a chance to sit down and talk to the Illinois folks at the HHI meetings in Florida last month. They were working very hard on the state legislature to get this done. I know that they were under the impression that they had about 60% in their favor for the upcoming vote. I will be watching closely as well, and hope they get the job done!! With Illinois/Ohio hopefully pushing slots through, our state is going to have to do something!!!

Comments Like the new web site, looks like the Illinois Assoc. & horsemen are really working hard on their situation and will know the fruits of there labors by tuesday, I wish Ky was doing their part.Of course Illinois getting slots would surely help us, bring St Louis back into the racing circuit! Of course getting things going here would be better.
