Living "next door" to LaSalle and Bro. Marvin, I would see him at mass on Sunday and around Eureka. My last discussion with him was an impromptu breakfast where he joined my wife Betty and I -- what a great gift to have that interaction to remember him by.

As a young novice I had a horrible day. I got a truck stuck in the mud in the lower field, bent the spare tire holder of another truck trying to pull it out and knocked the door off the garage putting sway the "Big Cat" we had that I used to pull everything out - when I went to tell Bro. Marvin, I was so worried. He looked at me, smiled and said "Well I guess we know what you will be doing for the next few manual labor days" A quiet and gentle man.

Dear Brother Marvin, Although it is late after you have already returned to our Lord home, I just like say a thank you on the behalf of our family, a group of Vietnamese refugees landing at the Stritch Hall next to the Christian Brother College back in 1975 after many months that we almost perished on high sea of the South China Sea by the miraculous hand of God and Virgin Mary. You have extended to us your warmest welcome and brotherly love to fearful newcomers and you helped bring out the best of us with your true love touching. My mom often reminded us about your sense of humor that made us laugh and feel good about life. She already passed away last year at 99 years of age and I am sure that you already met her now in heaven. So when you are up in heaven near Jesus and Mary, please continue bless us with your smile and love. With love in Christ but will miss you always until we meet again, Michael Quang Nguyen & Family A former FSC PS: Also, just like to share a recent appearance of the Holy Cross and Virgin Mary of

I worked w/Brother Marvin in the Novitiate and then came back to Glencoe for the summer after finishing my Scholastciate year in Memphis. I was thrilled to be able to come back to Glencoe & work on the farm, pick plum-cherries w/Bro I. Phil, enJOY some GREAT Mexican meals prepared by the DEAR Sister's and be in the presence of such noteworthy men in the HOLY FAMILY side of Glencoe. St. Louis never had any draw for my visiting. Playing as I PHIL'S partner in handball while he 'hustled'a few donors was enough excitement. Marvin asked me to take care of an 'issue' that need immediate attention but i begged OFF from this HEAVY duty task but he said, Diz 'You're the only one who can pull this off & be desecrate and I know the Sister's will really appreciate it." So who was i to say NO to Brother Marvin, after completing the task, Marvin said, "job well done Diz, the nuns are very content." I wrote him a note later that fall telling him HOW MUCH I HAD ENJOYED the summer in Glencoe, but still had regrets about the HEAV

I met Br. Marvin on my first ACTS retreat back in 2006. Connected with him immediately as I was taught by CBC brothers in high school. After talking to my parents later about being at LaSalle, they told me that they had been there many times & had I met Br. Marvin, who was the uncle to a good friend from high school/college? I was thrilled to tell him that the next time I saw him, and he never forgot it. Every retreat, every candlelight (which he always seemed to make!) he would fill me in on how his niece Gerrie was doing. :) Br. Marvin & LaSalle - holy ground, holy man - couldn't help but make you feel calm, peaceful & closer to God!

I first met Brother Marvin back in the late 90's while working on teams for Cursillo. Then later on, with the Kairos Outside Prison Ministry (for women). He was always so helpful & always with a smile. Every time I saw him, I got a big hug & a warm welcome. He will be truly missed.

Brother Msrvin was an amazing monk. A true craftsman, smart enought to insure Glencoe's water supply, and able to make a vistor feel welcome in an instant. A "working" brother in a true sense of the word. Thanks for all that you have done

Brother Marvin was my mentor for 5 1/2 years in Glencoe and Memphis beginning in January 1955. Throughout his life, he worshiped God by serving others. He transformed La Salle Center so that it could continue its mission to help people be all that they could be. He filled vacuums accomplishing important things that would have been left undone without him. He always focused on the best in everyone; he was never judgmental. He was a man a diverse talents; he could learn how to do anything. He was a Christian Brother par excellence.

Bro. Marvin, every director's on site co-director. Having the privilege of directing two retreats at LaSalle, I can't tell you how many times Bro. Marvin was there for me when we needed help. One instance was when our Saturday Mass was going long due to a healing Mass where we had a number of visiting Christian Brothers in attendance. I felt I needed to alert the kitchen to hold back breakfast and as I was leaving the service Bro. Marvin stopped me and said "Jim, I took care of it and pushed back your breakfast time for you". I will always feel his presence at LaSalle and know he's got my back, co-directing from above.....

Well about 8 or 9 years ago I sat in the dining room to listen to one of Brother Marvin's presentations about LaSalle. He went through a list of things that they needed done, It seemed I could do most of what was mentioned. So I started to come out Every Friday to "volunteer". I became very impressed with his abilities, and inspired by his spirit. Which most already know, but most did not see his "streak". He could be very mischievousness, he and I played tricks and pranks on each other all the time. But to summarize, Brother Marvin was simply and truly a great man. I and so many will miss him, but for all to remember, he will always be resting at LaSalle now, and we all have the responsibility to carry his love for the place. Which is what he would request of us. He will be closely watching. And for those who know, he will be right there watching me cut the grass "Too Fast"

Brother Marvin is the face of LaSalle. When I think of Being up on the Mountain and in a Holy Place, what a better an more holy of a man one could see there is Brother Marvin. I know he will here those wonderful words from God, that I hope to hear when I enter the gates of heaven, "Well Done my Good and Faithful Servant, Well Done." He has shown the face of Christ to so many youths in his day but most of all so many of us men. Brother Marvin you will be missed but I know you will still be with all of us as we visit that Holy Place up on the Mountain called LaSalle. We love you and we miss you already and God has welcomed you home now.

Brother Marvin helped calm my nerves as a retreat director. As I sat in the chapel early Friday morning he asked if all was OK. I replied that I had some concerns for the weekend. Brother Marvin reminded me we were on Holy Ground and the Holy Spirit was present; the weekend would be wonderful. Just those few moments calmed my nerves and the weekend was amazing.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen. Thank you Brother Marvin for amazing hospitality and willingness to listen and to share the beauty of La Salle, as a High School student on retreat was the first time I discovered the beauty of LaSalle and Brother Marvin, not too many years later the grotto became a refuge for me and Brother Marvin was always willing to allow me the time to go to the grotto and sit and pray and reflect. Thank you Brother Marvin for allowing me the opportunity to many times experience the beauty of LaSalle and God's love and peace through you. God Bless you Brother Marvin.
