Great memories. My only visit to Marineland was Feb 11, 1987 during a field trip with East Middle School (Downey, Ca). Just took my 2 son and daughter to Vicente Point where we visited the museum. It brought back so many wonderful memories.

I lived in the South Bay from 1964 to 1995 and we went to Marineland a few times a year especially when relatives came out to visit. I had a friend who worked on costumes at the park in the early 80's. Too bad future generations were robbed of it's beauty and the up close learning experience due to corporate greed.

I remember back in the 60s my parents made reservations at the on ground hotel for our stay. Was excited on the drive from San Diego, what would I see? Walking through the gates I was so impressed by what I saw in the huge tank. So many different fish, so much going on. Bubbles, the Pilot whale, was doing acts and could be watched through underwater windows. I had a great time interacting with all the fish/displays. Back at the room, it over looked the ocean, steep grassy slopes going down to the ocean. For a city kid this was one awesome trip. Memories.

Worked at Marineland in guest relations while in high school the last 1 1/2 years before it closed in 1987. Recently came across a few items from the park which I forgot I even had, including a group employee photo from 1987.

I worked at Marineland until the day HBJ closed it down. Security guards would not let anyone in that day and I had some personal items i needed. So I rammed the "gate" with my 1970 VW bus to get me stuff. The head curator at the time (Brad?) saw what was going on and pulled them (want to be cops) off me. He said I was the only one to get through the gate and he needed help. Over 40 seals/sea lions were still being cared for in the hospital at marineland and nobody was allowed in to care for them. I got to be the Assistant Head Curator for about a month. We helped the recovery of everyone of those animals and I personally got to put them back in the ocean. Everyone of them paused to look back and say thanks!! One of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I still miss that place...

I only went there once in 1973. Did some trespassing over the last weeks before the demolition in June 2005 and took approx. 300 pictures. Got a big kick about some of the graffiti in the theater. What a waste of a beautiful place! They are altering and building on Portuguese bend. Don't they realize that land constantly shifts there? Maybe Terranea will fall into the ocean like Trumps 18th hole did.

Grew up in OC, California and went to Marineland when I was a kid. For some reason I have a current fascination with it and have collected some memorabilia. Great site!

I visited Marineland on July 11, 1986, less than a year before it closed. I lived in Germany, and I had come to California for the first time. Staying with relatives in Santa Monica, I completely succumbed to the magic of the Golden State, and Marineland was surely part of it. I especially remember the Orca (which of the two was it?), the dolphins, and the high divers. I still have ca. 20 pictures (35 mm slides), including one of the orca snatching a fish from the trainer's mouth high up in the air. I wonder whether you could use them. I wish I had kept my brochure. I also remember the talk about Marineland's imminent closure, which seemed strange to me as the entire park buzzed with life (marine and human). I revisited the site on Thanksgiving 2008. Terranea was approaching completion. I got out of my car, but I could not enter the property (not legally, I mean). From the road, I could not make out any vestiges of Marineland. Nobody was around. The scene seemed surreal.

I lived in Long Beach from 1965 until 1973, and Marineland was one of my favorite places to visit as a child. I am sorry to hear that it was closed. I would have liked to share it with my daughter.

Thanks for the very interesting site. I grew up going to Marineland, and at a very early age realized that I wanted to work with marine mammals. Unfortunatly, by the time I graduated college, Marineland had been closed for quite a few years, but I was lucky enough to work at SeaWorld San Diego for 4 years with numerous ex-Marineland animals including Bubbles and Corky. Marineland and it's animals will always have a very special place in my heart and I am so grateful that I was able to experience it.

I was wondering about the magic and excitement That I had experienced as a child when I visited Marineland of the Pacific. I did not know that it closed down. We were there around 1969. I was just 11 years old and my brother was 10 years old. We had a wonderful time seeing everthing that they had there. I remenber buying these plastic moldings of various sea animals. The molding would take place in front of you and it would come out hot. Very cute. What a wonderful experience.
