Jeff Johns and my sister were very close. They attended my wedding together in March 1969. Six months later I attended Jeff's funeral. We named our son Jeffrey in memory of a fallen soldier. A few weeks ago Larry Johns contacted me. He was 14 years old when his brother died--I don't remember Larry from the funeral but I do recall the numbness of a grief-striken family trying to make sense of such a terrible loss. I served four years in the Navy 1965-1969--two tours in Vietnam. The first aboard USS Rogers DD 876. The second with the Mobile Riverine Force, cox'n of an armor troop carrier in the Mekong Delta, working with the Army 9th Division and for four months on the Cua Viet River in I Corps with the 3rd Marine Division. My memoir, Muddy Jungle Rivers, was published in April 2012.View it at: www.muddyjunglerivers.com Larry's passion to remember his brother and the other men from Firebase Gela is laudable. I plan to submit an essay for Larry's anthology.

I was with lima plt. alpha co. 1/28 Black Lions.Got to my unit around March 1969. Was moved there right after it was built. Gela was my home when I wasn't in the bush. First job was humping ammo for the m-60 and later an RTO for the Lt. Larry this is a great thing you are doing.

Larry, When we meet two years ago and you told me about your brother Jeff, I immediately knew how devoted you were to him, his memory, and those he served with. It is an extraordinary venture you have embarked on to honor Jeff, and all those who served at FSB Gela. You will probably never fully realize how much it means to those who were at that tiny little place in the middle of the jungle, to be recognized for their service! I commend you for a job well done! You are indeed a brother! Love ya, man! Steve Clasen A Btry 8/6 Arty

Arrived Viet Nam Jan. 10, 1969. Walked point in 2nd platoon Charlie co. until April and then joined RECON. While with recon I was sent to a one week Sniper training and for the rest of my time in recon carried a special M-14 with sniper ammo. Not that great in the jungle! Was with recon until Sept. Then was assigned to a Fifty cal. bunker for a short while. Then I became the battalion gopher (go for). It is another story. Still alive, retired, traveling, carousing etc.

For those of us who accepted our duty when our country called, the collection of Doc Shirley's photos and reflections of a younger American generation shown within "Contrasts of War" help me find the positive energy which Doc demonstrates. Here is an honored citizen, who shows no bitterness but only the empathy for the people of a war-torn country and the troopers who occupied it. I was always looking to the day I would leave. Bob used his time wisely and left us a legacy of photo memories. Thank you, Bob and Larry for such a poignant book.

Larry. Great job and the latest with many wonderful, memorable photos is a great tribute to us and those who had the historical foresight to take and preserve those photos. I honor today, Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, the memories of SSGT Fleitman and 2LT Keahey III, 1/28th Delta Company, Gela occupants, killed in action on 1969June08. And to all those Delta Company members during that time, God Bless you and may life be good!

Bergie and I were in 1/28 Charlie company for the mothers day ground attack. Our side of the perimeter was not the side attacked. At about 3am when it was over I took a stretcher and pulled a poncho liner over my head and went to sleep, when I awoke about 7 am I noticed that the other stretchers were lined up next to me they had mistaken me for a kia and put all the bodiesaound me as our position was closest to the helipad. Bergie and I were also at Gela the day the Lt. and sergeant were killed by mortor fire.

I joined 1/28th Recon in late June/'69. Met your Brother Jeff. He started giving out information for us new guys.Recon was different from a Line Co. and he said we better damn well pay attention. His death affected me deeply. Loosing almost all of Recon in 2 days was devastating. I had 6 more months, in the boonies, after my Recon membership up North. Thank you for doing this project Larry. Like I said, I'll be seeing you in Mid - Late August 2012.

I served in RVN from July 1969- August 1970, with the American Red Cross. I was a Donut Dollie and my first duty station was Lai Khe and the Big Red One. My first visit to the field was to FSB Gela! It was quite an adventure. That first visit out there we saw A Co 1/28th and we were able to spend some time with 2/33 Arty battery. Gela became my favorite field visit and my favorite "guys." I was only in Lai Khe until October of 1969, but Gela always held a place in my heart throughout my year in RVN. I married a man I met on Gela though we did not really know eachother until we reconnected in the States, but we always tell the story that we met "in the jungle." I have some photos and will send them along some day. Thank you for making this site available. We reunite every year with about 30 guys who served in A Co. 1/28th and were on Gela. They will be thrilled to see this site!! Welcome home! Nancy
