Glad to see another train to Lynchburg. I look forward to the day when there's a direct train route from WDC to Memphis.

I am very excited about the efforts of the Charlottesville Citizens and the Piedmont Coalition. Yes we have new service! I do not read anything about expanding existintg service on the Amtrak Cardnal which only runs 3 day a week in each direction. Are there any plans to expand that service?

Matthew Tucker, Director C/o Public Information Office Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation 1313 East Main Street, Suite 300 Richmond VA 23219 Dear Mr. Tucker, We fully support the new train service from Charlottesville to Union Station. My husband would take the service each week and I would take it at least once a month. Many of our neighbors have grown children and grandchildren in the DC area and look forward to using the train service as well. We were hoping that the planned rail service would depart from Lynchburg at 5:05 AM, arrive in Charlottesville by 6:17 AM, and reach Union Station at 8:40 AM. Those times appeared in a January 2008 AMTRAK do #$@%! which also states “the combination of the morning and evening trains would establish a good service pattern for business travel to and from Washington, D.C. – a first for this region.” ..... We hope you consider changing the departure times in Lynchburg so that the commuter train arrives before 9 a.m. into Union Station, justifying rai

I travel once a week from my home to Manassas and take the VRE in to Crystal City. The first part of my trip is a groggy, white-knuckle experience in the early-morning darkness. The second part is a relaxing ride, where I can go on the clock and get a start on my workday. I'm very interested in taking the rail from Charlottesville as the second-best solution to actually havig a job in Charlottesville.

I and many friends have wanted to move to Charlottesville and Albemarle County but because it is so isolated, we haven't been able to make that move. If train service is added from Charlottesville and Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville is made more accessible, we will definitely move to Charlottesville. I know many of my friends feel the same way. So please - build the train and we will come!

I worked for Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern for 40 yrs part of that running trains from Monroe to AF Tower Alexandria as a train dispatcher. Ridership was down then and it will down now. Everyone wants the auto with them.

The Trains for Virginia initiatives are vital to the long-term economic health of the Commonwealth and the region. Recent news stories on the huge increase in use of mass transit due to high gas prices highlight the importance of these efforts. One only has to spend a few days in any European city to see the beneficial effects of a viable, affordable inter-modal mass transportation system.

Good work. Wish I could contribute more than the member share. You need to publicize this more. Get some more recognition. Ask the Wash Post to do a story on your site and your efforts. I'm shocked that 0% tax allocations go to our trains in VA! The gas is way too expensive to continue without trains--plus the emissions are so much less than cars or planes.

As a proponent for balanced transportation, particularly RAIL options that America has long ignored, I totally support this new Charlottesville/Culpepper to New York City AMTRAK service. To further interest in your organization, I have taken the liberty to post the message about this on on the "TRAINORDERS.COM" Passenger Rail discussion board as of May 21, 2008. It had already had 30+ views within the first 5 minutes of its posting, here: All my hopes for our continuing success for this new AMTRAK service, possible VRE extension toward Culpepper and Charlottesville (as well as Richmond --- and also between Lynchburg and Roanoke), and when determined to be a feasible addition, the TransDominion Express. To many of us, such viable travel options that keep America MOBILE can't come soon enough. Sincerely, Rhett Coates

I certainly like what you are promoting. We design transit systems and I personally think this is were all our transportation dollars need to be going for the next 50 years - just like the roads from the past 50 years. I would be in Charlottesville this weekend if I could ride the train. Keep up the great work! Bill

We have lived in the C'ville area for over a year now and travel to D.C. by car to Vienna and then take the Metro. It would be great to be able to take a train at C'ville station (with better parking and lighting). Just think of the additional visitors to C'ville and vice versa to D.C. It should have been thought about years ago.... especially with gas prices increasing constantly! Traveling in Europe by train is wonderful, comfortable and cost effective. We should learn something from them.

It's great to hear that a group is working to increase rail service, BUT What about repair and improvement to our rail system to ship goods and materials thereby reducing the number of trucks on our roads? SHIP BY RAIL should be a phrase on everyone's lips. This would relieve congestion, reduce catastrophic accidents, decrease pollution and our dependence on foreign oil.

A market study investigating the real anticipated benefit of rail b/t C'ville and DC would be interesting to see. By 2010 BRAC will force several hundred highly skilled government jobs into the area from DC. An efficient and inexpensive commuter line could entice many government staff uninterested in moving to stay in their DC suburb but commute to C'ville. As a former DC suburbanite I anticipate an added benefit for both DC and C'ville tourists wishing for an easy weekend route to VA wineries or DC based culture. I encourage a study to see if indeed there is a market for both the commuter and tourist.

I have been a supporter of long distance AMTRAK for about ten years, and use it to visit my family. I also belong to NARP and "talk it up" among my friends. We need long distance trains in the U.S.
