Comments I just discovered that Warren is no longer in this world. I was the graphic designer who worked with him on the cover for INTER LISP. It was one of the most jovial assignments I ever completed. He wanted the little people to be all over the words like bugs and doing their individual tasks. He described the various functions and together we kicked around what that would look like with the cartoon people. We laughed a lot! Xerox wanted to use their own graphics person but he had seen some of my doodles and non-professional stuff and wanted that look. I kept being concerned that the "slick look" of all the Xerox advertising and other company promos didn't jibe with this "comic book" look. He didn't care and was adamant that the book was going to look the way HE wanted it. He wanted it fun and funny. So that's what we did!

Comments I have many fond memories of working for Warren at Sun in the Window System organization. He pushed us and challenged us and supported us. And he's the reason I'm a software engineering manager. He got me to try engineering management when I was a project lead even though I was convinced it was not a good move for me. And he was right - I loved it and I was good at it - and I'm still doing it. Warren had a lot of integrity and was a good mentor. I was just telling someone about him recently when we were discussing management as a possible career path. Warren was also open to me continuing to work in his organization when my husband and I moved to CO in 1990 so Eric could start a Sun site here, and that worked out really well. But none of us knew it would work, and he was still willing to take the chance. Another very fond memory I have of Warren is a day Eric and I skiied with him and another co-worker at Squaw Valley. Warren kept giving me tips about how to go faster and I finally had to tell him that I really didn't *w

Comments Deb, you may not remember me. I worked with Warren at Remedy, as the CMO. He had a tremendous influence on me. I remember being graciously welcomed by you into your home. After the Peregrine acquisition, I returned to Texas to raise my daughters. My belated thank for your hospitality and friendship is long overdue, but sincer. Your husband was very generous with his time and genius, and I will forever be grateful. Thank you again for your warmth and friendship extended to to me during that tumultuous acquisition. I will forever be grateful to the two of you, and I regret I allowed the years to slip away. My most sincere condolences on your loss. I know Warren loved you very, very much. Sincerely, Lori Christian Hathaway

Comments Orchid facts are almost as varied as the exotic and beautiful flowers themselves. At one point in time, it was thought that only the very rich could afford to raise orchids as they require a great deal of specialized care. Now, with the tremendous amount of species available, including many hybrids that thrive in more temperate climates, it is possible for anyone to grow these lovely flowers. The care of your orchid will depend on what specific type it is. There are over 20,000 individual species of orchid, all coming from a variety of environments, so the particular care theyll need in terms of light, water and feeding, will be directly linked to their natural habitat. The first step in properly caring for your orchid is to identify the species and learn all you can about whatever special needs it may have.Another of the orchid facts which directly affects the kind of care an orchid should get is the way it grows. Orchids grow in one of two ways: either terrestrially, meaning in the ground, or aerially. Aerial orchids grow on the side

Comments Warren was a great inspiration to me, as a new recruit at Xerox PARC and later when I joined engineering management at Sun. He was thoughtful, insightful, and kind to everyone. A great colleague.

Comments Warren was a formidable figure even among the giants at PARC. In those days, the only thing I ever saw him display patience with was my lousy serve. I only met him once after he left PARC, soon after he had married. Condolences to his family. Here's a story about Warren that was told at the 30th anniversary of the Xerox Alto at the CHM some years ago: In the frustrating days when PARC was trying to demonstrate the future to Xerox executives, there were occasional visits from the Powers That Be in the East. One of them, upon returning to the corporate lair, was reputed to have said to his "assistant": I finally met a man who can type faster than you can. Sigh. Of course, that was Warren.

Comments I joined Warren's agility class a couple of years ago. He was a true student of the game and always wanted to know the "why" behind the "how". He didn't talk a lot about his life outside of agility but often wore a Google jacket with his custom-made Headband Aussie Guy t-shirt. His DWIM license plate should have been my first clue but don't we all hope our dogs will DWIM and not what we tell them to do? My warmest thoughts go out to his family.

Comments I didn't know Warren, but I certainly saw him around at our agility competitions and he was right in there working to do his best. Also, having been in the software world for several decades, reading about his activities and achievements after his death brought many memories of years past. His loss is a loss to the agility community.

Comments I met Warren just a few months back through Ali Golshan who is my colleague at Cyphort. We were exploring opportunities for Warren to help us with some R&D needs. I was impressed with his accomplishments and really liked his enthusiasm for pursuing new technical challenges. His departure is a great loss for the high-tech community.

Comments I was extremely saddened to hear about Warren’s passing. He was among a very few ex-coworkers I had been reminding myself "I really need to get back in touch with him/her" for the past several years. Warren and I joined Google at the same time and bonded the minute we met (which was in a meeting during which we both peppered some poor person about design details of a system being developed). We had very different backgrounds and personalities, and embarked upon very different career trajectories within the company, but we were connected in some profound ways. Warren’s work at Google was nothing short of extraordinary, if not necessarily putting him in the running to win a popularity contest. He was immensely proud of his work, and he had good reason to be. We chatted often, about work, skiing, cars, technology. He would tell me some of his stories and give me updates on his side projects. He was remarkably compassionate. When I officially went into management Warren was one of my biggest supporters and, although he probably didn't

Comments I first met Warren at Google in 2003 when I was just starting my career, and I always looked forward to sitting down at lunch with Warren and hear his amazing stories of his pioneering days. Several years later, I had the pleasure of getting to know Warren even better through our shared interests of playing poker and high end home theater installations. He was a great, down-to-earth guy that I admired greatly. I will miss him.

Comments Warren was my first TL when I joined Google. With him, I learned the ropes of how to prioritize features (esp when he pushed back) and think about the end user not just the business. We had our ups and downs, but he was always frank and open with me as I was with him. He will always be remembered.

Comments continued.... When Google acquired YouTube and we started working on the integration process I coined a new nickname for Warren and started introducing him as “The Man Behind the Curtain”. YouTubers were sooo excited to meet this mysterious man that when I finally had him come to the offices it was a packed house! On a side note, I think Warren liked this nickname but he would never admit it. Warren had a big impact on my professional career and for that I am truly grateful. He was a brilliant, funny, quirky and dear person with a heart of gold whom I will never forget. There are so many other funny Warren stories that I cherish, but I wanted to share at least one here on his GuestBook.

Comments I met Warren while working at Google. When I first heard of him my manager referred to him as "Wardog" (this is still his name in phone contacts). When I asked why “Wardog” she explained that he was a brilliant engineer who would tend to scare the crap out of people. (When I later told Warren about this he got that adorable devious smile of his and started cracking up). She then explained that I would be working with him on our contract processing tool "COS". Great, I thought. They are throwing me to the dogs (this was pre Warren having Zayvee). I went to Warren's office to start on the project and was a bit intimidated I must admit. Warren and I sat down and started going over requirements and I was immediately told “don't tell me how to do my job, just tell me what you need”. And then it hit me... Warren was just like my father! An engineer to the core, direct and no-nonsense. Immediately I was strangely at ease. As the years went on Warren and I continued to work together on projects. When Google acquired Y

Comments As a fellow Aussie owner, I know what it's like to not have the fastest dog on the field. But watching Warren work with Zayvee and Pirate was always fun because of the enthusiasm and patience Warren always had. We will miss him.

Comments It was fun working with Warren at Google. He was a fun person to spend time with, and it makes me sad that he has left us so soon. Warren wasn't shy about tackling difficult problems, and threw himself into the deep end and made things work.

Comments I never actually knew warren, but he was a face I have seen at almost every agility trial I have ever entered. He was one of the "regulars" I always expected to see at a trial, and thus was woven into the fabric of my own agility experiences. My thoughts are with his family. Please know that Warren will be missed.

Comments Warren was the first mentor I had in the industry that was able to push me beyond my comfort limit. He taught me the true value of working with people, with humans that have desires, goals, concerns, conflicts and a life. And he was always able to approach both work and life with a sense of humor! He will be missed. He will be remembered.

Comments Like many of his 'dog friends' I was stunned to read the news of Warren's passing. I did not know him well, but remember he always had a smile & greeting for those of us in the agility crowd. He could almost always be counted on to lend a hand working a class. He was so happy & excited the last time I saw him run, at SMART, and so very proud of Pirate. I hope that someone can run Pirate at the PASA trial in November in honor of Warren. I think it would make him smile, wherever he may be. Deepest sympathy & best wishes. Maggie Guthrie & Corgi the Aussie

Comments I'm so sorry to hear of Warrens passing. My Doberman Khan and I met him at dog training, taking several classes with Georganne. He made those classes fun adding many of his own ideas. His love and dedication to Zayvee were most admirable. It spoke volumes about him as a man and human being . My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the many many people whose lives were touched by this special man.
